EXPLORE OUR URBAN GEOHERITAGE

The half day trip to Klang Gate Ridge on the 12th of November 2011 was part of the Explore our Urban Geoheritage programme, jointly organized by Young Earth Scientist (YES) Malaysia Chapter, Institute for Environment and development (LESTARI), and Geological Society of Malaysia. The objective of this awareness programme was to familiarize geologist on the present of geoheritage within urban area which need to be protected and necessity to balance development and conservation. The Klang Gate Ridge is under the State park of Selangor is 1.5km long making it the longest and biggest quartz rigde in the country and perhaps in the region. The hiking trip brought together 26 participants from University Kebangsaan Malaysia, Department of Mineral and Geoscience Malaysia (DMGM) and Depart of Heritage. The participants were briefed on the geological formation of the area by the organizer. In addition, they were also provided with leaflets which were sponsored by Trees a local NGO, and by the Department of Mineral and Geoscience. The participants contributed recommendation and suggestion based on their experiences during their visit on this site. This feedback includes; emphasizing more awareness programme for young geologist and local resident on the importance of geological heritage in their town; conservation of The Klang Gate Ridge should be prioritize for maintaining the balance of the environment and for future generation; and the scientific interpretation for the general public need to be improve. In addition the participants suggests that proper road sign that lead to the ridge should be put in place.  LESTARI and DMGM are in the process of proposing this area to be declared as National Heritage to the Department of Heritage.

Report _Dialogue YES Malaysia

For the first time the Young Earth Scientist (YES) Chapter Malaysia has called upon the young earth scientists in the country, for a dialogue on the Future and Challenges of Earth Scientists in Malaysia. This historic event took place in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia on the 4th of May 2011. This dialogue was co-organised by the Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI),Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the Geological Society of Malaysia. The dialogue gathered 50 young earth scientists from government bodies, universities, private companies and individuals throughout the country. For those who couldn’t attend the dialogue, they were able to follow the event via Skype. This event was officiated by Prof. Dr. Mazlin Mokhtar the director of LESTARI. The panel were Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ibrahim Komoo a distinguished earth scientist who is a member of National Professor Council, Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and a Fellow at the Institute Geology of Malaysia and Mr.Lim Choun Sian (Asst. Secretary) on behalf of the President of the Geological Society of Malaysia. The dialogue identified several challenges pertaining to the future of earth scientist in Malaysia. The first challenge is lack of leadership among the earth scientist which hinders the growth of this field. Among the consequences of this shortcoming are inability to play an active role in decision making, planning and implementing matters related to earth science. The second challenge is lack of capacity in coping and delivering meaningful contribution to the various needs in developing the country. Therefore the important of this field is not conspicuous to professional from other fields.  Since we have identified the challenges, it is crucial for all young earth scientists to be a part of a geological organisation, either the Geological Society of Malaysia or Institute Geology of Malaysia to strengthen the earth scientists community of in the country. YES with the support from local and international organisations will be a platform for the young scientist to contribute towards the community at a local an international level.

Notes: This  report also been published in the LESTARI website, GSM Warta and YES Network bulletin.  Some changes in content might occur to suit the purpose and vision of institution.

Following the proclaiming of triennium International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) by UN General Assembly in 2007. Youth all over the world took an initiative to support idea of IYPE and implementing its various themes by joining their hands and form a network called Young Earth Scientist (YES) network. The network provides a brilliantly platform for young professionals both practitioners and academicians) from different fields of earth sciences aged below 35 years old, to present their concern and solutions regarding to different scientific challenges facing our planet earth today, as well as sharing experiences together. At first, YES network members world wide gathered in Beijing China in the first world YES congress held at China University of Geosciences (October 25-28, 2009), to discuss and present various scientific papers based on ten themes of IYPE. After UN sees the successful of IYPE, the General Assembly meet in Lisbon, Portugal 2009 and decide to institutionalize IYPE, and therefore YES network recognized legally as one of the implementers of the IYPE programs worldwide.

Terus bersama kami.

Salam
